Introducing the Inaugural ABC Bullion Art Series Coin: A Collaboration with Artist Chun Yin Rainbow Chan

Chan, an Australian Hong Kong–Chinese artist celebrated for blending tradition with modern technology, has reimagined ancient Eastern ink-painting techniques through precious metal. Her centrepiece design—a bold, kinetic horse—honours the 2026 Year of the Fire Horse, a zodiac sign revered for its energy, creativity and independent spirit.

An Artistic Vision Brought to Life in Precious Metal

Working across sound, image, video and sculpture, Chan drew upon the symbolism of the Fire Horse to inspire her artwork. Using expressive ink strokes and splatters, she created a powerful, gestural image intended to capture movement, passion and freedom.

This original artwork was meticulously translated into a three-dimensional coin by respected minting expert Tony Dean, a frequent ABC Mint collaborator known for his work with the Royal Australian Mint. The result is a piece that melds artistic expression with technical precision—an object that is as meaningful as it is collectable.

On the coin’s reverse, the horse is accompanied by the traditional Chinese character for “horse,” reinterpreted in a contemporary calligraphic style. The year 2026 and the words “Year of the Horse” also appear, along with Chan’s artist signature, creating an intricate fusion of culture and design.

A Large-Scale Installation in Sydney’s Martin Place

To mark the release, Chan’s expressive Fire Horse is also featured in a bespoke window installation at the ABC Bullion Global Flagship in Sydney’s Martin Place. Inspired by ancient bronze inscriptions, traditional ink techniques and the lively spirit of the Fire Horse, the installation brings her work into a striking, street-level experience.

“My installation pays tribute to the fascinating history of early Chinese writing and metal inscriptions, while celebrating the expressive forms rooted in the characters’ pictographic origins,” Chan explains. “I have reimagined the characters through a contemporary lens, combining calligraphy, graphic design and mark-making with incense sticks. The resulting artwork is bold and poetic.”

The installation will be on display through March 2026.
